There is the chance that they're using Carthaginian to mean Punic (so he could be from Utica or some other settlement), but I doubt it. Most likely a complete lack of decent research.DemetriosXnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-73880135769088914682010-06-25T12:21:42.472+01:002010-06-25T12:21:42.472+01:00That was it - I'd missed that. Having actually seen the whole series already, I've found the couple I've looked at hysterical!

(Also, I think the reason Xena couldn't have sex with John Hannah was that JH had buggered off into town to see Aufudius (or something like that) and wasn't going to be back within the allotted hour...)

Note to self: Must bookmark this blog!Gemmanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-14941415262076959762010-06-25T11:10:03.531+01:002010-06-25T11:10:03.531+01:00OK, put it this way - between 146 BC and the reset...OK, put it this way - between 146 BC and the resettlement under Augustus, Carthage was not a well-populated city. It would have been nothing more than a village or very small town, if that. And to be honest, I think it was more or less abandoned. And I'm pretty sure there was specific reference made to Barca's capture during the war. i.e. in 146 BC, anyway, though I don't have the episode recorded and can't remember exactly.Juliettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00203399623895589924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-56928591078320469742010-06-25T11:07:12.147+01:002010-06-25T11:07:12.147+01:00There's some question as to just how thorough ...There's some question as to just how thorough the destruction of Carthage was. The sowing of salt may have been largely symbolic, which makes sense if you think about it. How long and how much salt would it take to ruin all of the fields for a good-sized city? If I remember my Plutarch rightly, Marius even fled there after his sixth consulate. The resettling under Augustus was probably more a refoundation and an acceptance of what already was.DemetriosXnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-34244985776516871122010-06-25T10:34:30.928+01:002010-06-25T10:34:30.928+01:00Thanks everyone! :)
H, the problem with Carthage ...Thanks everyone! :)

H, the problem with Carthage is that after it was defeated, the Romans destroyed the city and sowed the ground with salt, so that no one could live there any more, as crops wouldn't grow. Presumably there were survivors left in modern Tunisia, but not in Carthage itself. The city was eventually resettled under Augustus, as by that time the ground had recovered, and became propserous again, but in the time of Spartacus, it would still have been uninhabitable.Juliettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00203399623895589924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-90718069139882498622010-06-25T02:43:18.181+01:002010-06-25T02:43:18.181+01:00Hi, first time visitor.
