It might have been in the third movie when he's retiring, but I can't swear to it. Heck, it might even have been in one of the TV shows, though I don't think so.

I think I've heard a recording of Shakespearean Baseball many years ago. Fifties/Sixties era comedy wasn't averse to doing the occasional classics reference, maybe because of all those Biblical and Roman epics Hollywood was putting out. The brilliant Ernie Kovacs did a skit as a Roman news reader that very may well have influenced at least one scene in Star Trek's Roman episode. And Lord Buckley gave a jazz lingo version of Antony's funeral speech: "Hipsters, flipsters and finger-poppin' daddies: knock me your lobes."DemetriosXnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-27190067922428065642012-03-15T15:22:42.933+00:002012-03-15T15:22:42.933+00:00Gary, that sounds very funny - I'm British, so...Gary, that sounds very funny - I'm British, so I've not heard of them and I only know of Ed Sullivan as some old American TV show that had pop music on it, but I'll keep an eye out for them!

I don't remember that scene from the Naked Gun films, but I haven't seen them in a while, will watch out for it when they're next on!Juliettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00203399623895589924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-74952396928752651972012-03-15T11:53:44.585+00:002012-03-15T11:53:44.585+00:00Although a lot of people associate the salad with ...Although a lot of people associate the salad with Julius Caesar, it is actually named for a restaurateur in Tijuana, Mexico. Back in the 20s and 30s, especially during Prohibition, Tijuana was a popular spot for Hollywood stars, LA oil millionaires, and whatever one called the jet set in the age before jets. Mostly because they could get a drink legally during and after a day of horse racing, bullfighting or jai alai. Hotel Caesar (named for chef-owner Caesar Cardini) was THE place to dine.

I'll add as a companion to the Blackadder entry, one of the Naked Gun movies, I forget which. We are told that Frank Drebin happened on a Shakespeare in the Park performance of Julius Caesar just in time for the assassination scene, whereupon he gunned down the entire cast.DemetriosXnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-78077547483278201632012-03-15T11:34:58.121+00:002012-03-15T11:34:58.121+00:00Clearly before your time, but you should see Canad...Clearly before your time, but you should see Canadian comedians Wayne & Shuster's 'Rinse the Blood Off My Toga'. They did very witty comedy on Canadian TV and this sketch, along with many others, was performed on The Ed Sullivan Show for American TV. Wayne and Shuster have the record for most appearances on Sullivan. The sketch treats the death of Caesar as if it was an episode of a contemporary TV detective show, although it is set in Roman times. My favourite joke has the detective at the bar ask for a drink.

DETECTIVE: I'll have a martinus.
BARTENDER: Don't you mean martini?

It seems Wayne & Shuster might be right up your alley. They were also famous for a sketch called Shakespearean Baseball.
DETECTIVE: If I want 2, I'll ask for them.Gary Pearsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18152122769228032312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-39396046875681493732012-03-15T10:52:43.704+00:002012-03-15T10:52:43.704+00:00Lots of fun!
