Is quite different from the movie, as being a lot more accurate. All that line of Caesar idea is not found in the book but the sword is.REDrakehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13369747319623192689noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-38278474447042588282011-03-14T13:11:48.882+00:002011-03-14T13:11:48.882+00:00lol! Good to see Firth not wearing 19th Century garb or an Xmas sweater for a change!

I have not seen this film but am definitely going to track it down having read this review. I like such 'guilty pleasures' - liberally mixing history and mythology/fantasy.

Kind Regards
HAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02091875643921165081noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-85964595048505143122011-02-28T21:56:05.408+00:002011-02-28T21:56:05.408+00:00I suspect the Arthur/Rome connection goes further ...I suspect the Arthur/Rome connection goes further back than that - my compendium I had as a child had all sorts of stuff about Brutus that was different to the Mary Stewart version. The problem is that filmmakers like to make it look 'historical', which it simply isn't - but then, nor is Arthur, so they're onto a loser anyway. This one's not too bad, and the Crystal Cave is mystical enough to get away with it too - as is Stephen Lawhead's version, which involves Atlantis and therefore firmly places itself in the area of myth.Juliettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00203399623895589924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-82193343785574053552011-02-28T21:38:23.582+00:002011-02-28T21:38:23.582+00:00I vaguely remember this coming out.It flared very ...I vaguely remember this coming out.It flared very quickly and none too brightly, before vanishing again. Since Manfredi is an archaeologist and professor, I wonder how much of his book is actually in this film.

I'll give them tying Arthur to Rome. That has been a trend for the last 30 or 40 years, ever since Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy. Malory as filtered through T.H. White has largely given way to an "historical" Arthur (the best of which may be Jack Whyte's Camulod Chronicles). And certainly there's enough there in the early sources to make a go of it.

But Romulus Augustulus as Caesar's descendant? Apart from the rather rapid disappearance of actual blood relatives of his, Romulus came from Pannonian and Norican families. He was likely far more Celt than Italian. For that matter, he wasn't even the legitimate western emperor, just a usurper placed on the throne by his father.

But it does sound like it might not be too bad if you can forget all of that. Maybe it needs a classicist's RiffTrax.DemetriosXnoreply@blogger.com
