I love the series: for me the mix of Philip Marlowe with Rome works brilliantly because of the intrigue and corruption of the world she describes. I'd recommend the BBC dramatisations. The voice over bits work fantastically well with the Chandleresque dialogue.Alihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02536038271600515021noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-11283087306877561072011-10-09T13:53:49.670+01:002011-10-09T13:53:49.670+01:00Lol! I can't remember if the cisterns are mentioned - there was a cellar or something where Falco got chased, but it might just have been a cellar (I was focusing on coming off the M40 at the time!)Juliettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00203399623895589924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-72813944448875364022011-10-08T12:23:16.833+01:002011-10-08T12:23:16.833+01:00The Course of Honour is my fave, too. But I love Davis's descriptions of Flavian Rome.

Does she mention the cisterns in her book? The city was honeycombed with them, but not many people know that, including many Alexandrians!

I went to Alexandria on an optional day excursion as part of an expensive Kuoni Cairo tour a few years ago, to research for my book set in Alexandria, The Scribes from Alexandria. Our young Egyptian guide insisted there were no cisterns beneath the city. "My girlfriend lives here in Alexandria," he said. "If there were cisterns don't you think I'd know about them?"

So I had to get my cistern fix in Istanbul!Caroline Lawrencehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07249424644829463560noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-85871366020639135122011-10-07T08:35:28.207+01:002011-10-07T08:35:28.207+01:00Aw, that's a shame :( Mind you, my favourite o...Aw, that's a shame :( Mind you, my favourite of Davis' books is actually not a Falco one - I really loved The Course of Honour - so maybe she'll write more like that, that'd be cool.Juliettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00203399623895589924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-75794161752336852462011-10-07T07:16:45.117+01:002011-10-07T07:16:45.117+01:00I did read the books in the correct order and I mu...I did read the books in the correct order and I must admit I heaved a sigh of relief when Falco and Helena got married. By that time I was hearily sick of their on again off again shenanigans.

I have the impression that "Nemesis", the book after "Alexandria", is meant to be the last Falco story, so it looks as if he may never get to visit Dalmatia.RWMGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04271851970303022440noreply@blogger.com
