I recently rediscovered it in a second hand book shop, and noticed all the faults you mention. I still love it, but it's like a classical sculpture that's got 'knocked about a bit'!Harriethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10643545512044229447noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-18328033738389409962011-03-25T20:11:27.636+00:002011-03-25T20:11:27.636+00:00I don't mind the 3rd category in general terms...I don't mind the 3rd category in general terms, but I tend to prefer the basic facts to be right - this one drove me crazy because I kept trying to remember who was actually alive, dead, still in public or whatever and it was so confusing! I used to get a basic idea of history from fiction - thank goodness I, Claudius was more accurate than this or I'd have spent the first two years of my undergrad degree very, very confusing!Juliettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00203399623895589924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-12443628502124244962011-03-25T19:02:29.295+00:002011-03-25T19:02:29.295+00:00Very interesting and well constructed review.

I can judge it better when I know the historical period, but I've seen it done enough to be wary nowadays of anything written about a period of history I'm not familiar with, and it makes me nervous for people who only get their history through fiction.

Actually, this 3rd category you mention kind of drives me nuts! It always feels like they're looking at the past through a modern lense of judgement, when you need to consider how things where judged "back in the day" (like what you pointed out for the treatment of slaves in Rome)CrazyCrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17512240982215608638noreply@blogger.com
