He is famously quoted as saying that only upon seeing how bloated he looked on screen that he lost weight and figured out his calling in life. He's in the street scene, viewed very briefly plucking a lyre. There's a pic of it here

Actually, one of my very first posts was about this film and related paintings - I was still a very green blogger back in the heady days of 2009 then and hadnt decided if 3PP was going to be about art or film. link

HAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02091875643921165081noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-53091558966268017172011-10-23T17:16:11.706+01:002011-10-23T17:16:11.706+01:00He definitely did! I think it is probably closer to ancient Rome than Julius Caesar and some other historical films.

Fellini wanted to show ancient Rome as a place more alien than Mars*. In that he succeeded!

"It was like speculating about life on Mars, but with the help of a Martian, so Satyricon satisfied in me some of my desire to make a science-fiction film." The imagery was very striking - I'm just more into narrative, personally (I even prefer classical music with some kind of narrative, like ballet or film scores)Juliettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00203399623895589924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-71578331060984890382011-10-22T00:01:32.694+01:002011-10-22T00:01:32.694+01:00Thanks for the review Juliette! If you are not familiar with its style and visual language, it can be quite jarring!

I think those with a background/interest in the visual arts get a kick out of Fellini the most - so symbolically rich...the textual source/dialogue as at times almost immaterial - which is probably the last thing a lover of letters would want to hear!

In the context of Fellini's broader catalogue, Satyricon sits wonderfully alongside other 'dream' pieces - another favourite of mine that you may enjoy is "Juliette of the Spirits" though not too much to do with classics.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059229/

Kind regards
HAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02091875643921165081noreply@blogger.com
