It's a TV show mostly about sex and blood. Lots and lots of blood.

As a German speaking person myself I found it hard to understand their phonetic German. But what I understood was really hilarious. Even funnier than the already funny Latin/English subtitles. Interestingly the big German, Sedullus, was played by the actor who played 'The Mountain that Rides' in Game of Thrones, whom he doesn't portray in the second season anymore. So I thought his part in Vengeance would be bigger, so the face lift was somewhat shocking (in a way that makes one laugh out of surprise). Even with a Katana that clean slice would have been questionable, but they use blunt Gladii. On the other hand they beheaded a guy with a rope in season 1. So I shouldn't wonder about such things anymore ^^Sebastiannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-3833366075179849002012-03-14T11:47:10.127+00:002012-03-14T11:47:10.127+00:00This is the show that had a Carthaginian still aro...This is the show that had a Carthaginian still around after several decades! I guess we just have to assume a random raiding party kidnapped some Germans and brought them back... by boat...for some reason!Juliettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00203399623895589924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-24860354243595556182012-03-13T22:09:07.975+00:002012-03-13T22:09:07.975+00:00Maybe the weird German subtitles are supposed to r...Maybe the weird German subtitles are supposed to represent the Latinate English they use? So we're getting the German subtitled in Latin, but we see it in English for the same reason two non-English speakers always speak English when they're alone in a Hollywood film. Just a theory.

But where did they get a boatload of Germans at this time? It's roughly a generation since Marius kicked the Cimbri back over the Alps and I think the next Roman to have any real contact with any Germanic tribe is Caesar, when he used them as part of his excuse for invading Gaul. I can't think of any Roman/German contact in between that might result in even one boatload of German slaves.DemetriosXnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-13451235740141877822012-03-13T19:34:39.192+00:002012-03-13T19:34:39.192+00:00Being outside the ludus is definitely part of it -...Being outside the ludus is definitely part of it - we don't get the glorious victory of the fights and the tight structure is gone. I think it's more than that for me though. Batiatus and Lucretia used to have orgies and various other parties, and sometimes their plans actually started to work a little. Galber and Ilythia are just getting more and more unhappy and somehow neither Spartacus nor Glaber have had much success apart from Spartacus' destruction of the amphitheatre - which was my favourite episode so far! Being out of the ludus can't be helped, but we need some more gleeful, fun-loving Romans, and some of Spartacus' people need to experience actual happiness as well (in more depth than Agron and Nasir, who just randomly kiss every now and then and that's it!).

Of course, Caesar will be appearing next season so that should liven things up!Juliettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00203399623895589924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730513615909994019.post-1317355054718441422012-03-13T18:16:13.990+00:002012-03-13T18:16:13.990+00:00Thanks for the recap Juliette! No.1 had been hatching this plan for ages, so it was no suprise he came back with a horde of Germans and an internal, loyalty proving riot broke out by the end of the episode!

Much of the different vibe is surely due to the lack of the Ludus - there's still a lot of folks shagging and having fun - just not those we're used to seeing in charge.

I'm finding Vengeance to be like the dark middle act - which you repeatedly see in anything from Macbeth to Empire Strikes Back. It will be ineteresting to see if they can keep it up for more than a season. Certainly for Spaartacus and his "army" - things are going to have to get better before they get worse.

I still cant get over that face slicing - a nice clean cut like a deli slicer! That blade must have been diamond tipped ;)

I really hope that bracelet isnt Gnomies undoing - he seems too slimily cunning for such an error. As creepy as he is, the show benefits from having such an irksome character to stir things up.

HAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02091875643921165081noreply@blogger.com
