Welcome! Now, how do I get started on this blog thingy...

The plan for this blog is to review uses of Greek and Roman culture and literature in modern popular culture, hopefully in a witty and entertaining way. This will include anything from Gladiator to Buffy the Vampire Slayer's use of Latin. First proper post to appear later, once I've actually done some work on my thesis...

  1. Hi Juliette,

This is a great idea, and one I've always thought of every time I come across a reference to the classics in TV programmes and films. I'd love to read your views on the Harry Potter series.

    Fabian (from the phorum)

  2. Hi Fabian!

I was going to do Dr Who: Fires of Pompeii next, then I will happily have a look at Harry Potter! Possibly one book/film at a time, depending how much is in each of them.

  3. Be careful... speaking from experience Blogging can the greatest procrastination tool you'll come across when it's thesis writing time! It's sooo much more fun than poring over article after article after article to find a few phrases to use in your introduction... *sigh*

  4. The blog is definitely starting to take over - its so much more fun than the thesis! (probably because, having gone for an informal blog, I've let myself off looking up any secondary references if I don't feel like it). It has given me some helpful stuff to look at for my forthcoming conference paper on Narnia, though, so it has its uses...

  5. You're doing a conference paper on Narnia?! Now that I'd love to read! Think you could link us to it from here when you're done? ;o)

Hmmm, I hadn't realise 'till you mentioned it in another post how much my view of centaurs has also been influenced by Narnia. Odd considering how much more I was into Greek mythology growing up... I guess CS Lewis just knows how to take over your imagination! ;o)

  6. I'm hoping to write up and publish the paper after, so as soon as I know what I'm doing with it, I'll post links or info here! I'll probably cover Narnia here at some point too, maybe focus on the movies to avoid repeating the paper too much...
